A week worth of work

paintings_1

So the past week I was busting my ass on work, reading, and <drum rolls> painting. For ten years I fancied myself an artist of this or that sort. Today I realize my painting style is a bit stupid, and in the end I make real childish drawings in general. But I still somehow hope making a living out of it. Why? How? Don’t know. There are worse than me out there who are doing well. And I just thought I deserve some too, yes?

And I did get some. Meaning I painted people I like (as you see they’re not all people, and not all are real people when they are people) and sent it to them. Bunny, aka Grav3yardGirl liked it on Instagram, Reina‘s image was reblogged by SF fan page on Tumblr, Kanadajin3 retweeted hers kindly, and Bree thanked me when doing so. Love these girls, and there’s a few more I must paint too.

What I do is I get into their Instagrams, for these days I feel like people put their images there when they feel their best, and I want to paint what they feel their best, because in my view – they’re great, but from some content these people uploaded, I know they not always feel the same way themselves. I enlarge the picture as much as I can, and just start drawing on a A5 (or is it A6? half of A4) page with a pencil, trying my best to imitate what their beautiful faces look like. As you see I stylize the hair a lot, since I can’t draw hair, and they all have real, like REAL nice hair. So I try doing it justice via what I can do in general. And then I just paint and paint, and paint. I change some things, I change the colors, I get frustrated every time, and then I try to scan it with my piece of trash old scanner. Which leaves me photoshopping the picture into the original color scheme for another half hour or so…

My point is: people work, and people work hard. You see an actor or an entertainer and think “wow, their life is so nice and easy”, but that’s a big fat lie you’re imagining there. And the shit these people cope with I don’t even want to imagine. So if you sit there, on YouTube, writing a new comment, and have a choice of saying “u ugly af ur teeth lik dis” and saying “u pretty af, love what u do” – think of which one of these you’d like to hear, and say the one. Just a drop of kindness goes a very long way.

And speaking of kindness: please check out and if possible, share my mum’s [CancerBattle]; or if you believe in good faith, maybe you’d like to help me run away with my own life with [NoMoreDebts]? Or just check out my [Tumblr], follow, share, like (there’s a donation button there too), or just come chat with me there.

2015, Thank You

So! Better late than never, they say. So let me be late and thank 2015 for the bad and the good. Well, just for the good, for talking about the bad would take forever, and would be a bit pointless, I think. If you don’t know, I’m struggling with manic depression. As a result there are times when I neither write, nor do anything, truly. But as I’m here today, willed into life by friends, I figured I’ll thank for the good stuff, for there was good stuff!

1_crafts

First of all, my favorite last year crafts. In the pictures, currently, only the second row middle is sold, to a Boss out there, I hope you’re kicking ass wearing these! Anyways, let’s start from the start. I waited forever for a chance to order some bat spacers-pendants, and those cabochons. And when I received them, I found myself unsure what to do with the beauties. In the end, I painted a lovingly smiling skull that I called Beloved, for it might as well be a lover immortal. Get it? Also, it’s not related to Skulduggery Pleasant on purpose, at that moment I didn’t yet know of such a fantastic character. Next, top in second row is a bracelet called Alice Hearts, my tribute to Alice in Wonderland. Always wanted to make one of those. Then there’s Saints Row tribute, one of my all time favorite games. I just had to give it its due therefor. And the last is Midas Gold earrings, all set in gold colors. To be honest, when I was making them, I was wondering if Varric (Dragon Age) wouldn’t be willing to get a pair (matching his own chain) for Bianca. The rest can be found [here]

And don’t you get me wrong. This year I have made many beautiful things. I sold a lot of them too, and people gave me kind reviews for each one. It was one of the most artistically rich and muse smile filled years for me. May this year be no less in this department.2_paintings

Starting with arts, let’s continue to where I started in the first place. I painted a great ton this year. I learned a lot about painting too. And putting together this little collage taught me I draw extremely similar faces, so I guess I have plenty to improve yet.  Anyway, there’s my own characters there, there’s Grav3yardgirl, Floki from Vikings, a comic book version of me, and quite a few postcards. I learned I loved making those, for I work best when I see full picture at once. I also just now realized I didn’t enter Vikings as my top hit of 2015, so letting you know right now – wow, loved it, wow! The rest of the paintings are [here]3_bestmoments

There were a lot of small moments that got to me too, although for the lack of pictures, some couldn’t end up in here. In spring I saw a woodpecker peck wood. I saw a ton of squirrels playing about. In summer my friends took me out to watch Inside Out and gave me a haircut upgrade, a very nice bleached undercut. We played Cards Against Humanity and had a blast therefor. And while my bookshelves were broken apart: this year was the year we put on a metal brace on it, and now it holds! I got a ton of presents for birthday, so many postcards from all over the world, so many tea packets, sweets, and kind words, I never ever got this much before. One of the many top hits is that Moriarty tie you see in one of the pictures. Loved how the envelope said “man’s tie” and the postcard pointed out Tarquin Blackwood was a chic guy, so I should be too.

Then there’s those moments I couldn’t mention, forgot, or just had no pictures of. Like getting review requests from publishers (yes, that equals free books). Authors contacting me, just to talk, or even them leaving me a comment or two somewhere. I’ve received a phone just because, had a pleasure of trying a lot of different energy drinks, including Monster: The Doctor, which is currently my favorite Monster flavor. Then there were other wins, like Grav3yardGirl liking and reblogging my painting of hers [here], Mortisia reblogging some of my stuff, Katers17, now known as KateInRealLife replying me to actually all of my messages. I re-opened my personal art Facebook Page and became part of Crowley Emporium project for crafts and jewelry, made by me and two of my friends.

And best of all, I realized what a bunch of amazing friends I have. Some found me brooding over the darkest moments in my life and helped me back up. Others just got there for a word or two, or an exchange of music that they heard and “thought of me”. I guess in this department I’m just lucky like that. I’ve people who go an extra mile to help if they’re means to do so. I hope they know that I love them all. 4_books

Then, as this blog demands, there’s the book wins. I admit, this year was indeed unyielding in time and will to read, and yet never the less I have something to rejoice about. For one it’d be me finding myself a new series to read and love, which are Skulduggery Pleasant books by Derek Landy. That skeleton mister just has the most perfect vibe about him. Got a lot of unusual, unique, and otherwise different reads this year too, those being Into the river by Ted Dawe, apparently a banned book following the story of this Maori boy in all-boys boarding school. Yakuza by Gabriel Loidolt, which I’d call “Irezumi” instead, a pretty damn nice book, very short, with very slight Murakami vibe to it. Very slight, mostly by the whole go-around. The Radleys by Matt Haig was a serious surprise. So simple, so mundane, and yet not at all, because every seen-a-hundred-times thing that family did was done by vampires, for they’re all vampires! And, of course, my own pick for the book club, Neuromancer by WIlliam Gibson. I wanted to read that one for so long! This blog of mine is mainly meant for horror, suspense, fantasy, and books alike, while I do realize I don’t follow the pattern. That is why I have made the Nosferatu Shelf category, to have those books put in a list. But this year I hope to fill it in a little more with Cyberpunk too. After all, we do await Cyberpunk 2077, don’t we?5_games

Speaking of games, here’s my nine hits. They’re not the releases of 2015 per se, but something I discovered, got to the end of, and loved last year. First was definitely Bastion. It somehow reminded me I like games, and that I should actually finish them now and then, and not just spend hundreds of hours doing anything but main quests, as so many games these days allow you to. While not the second one, still, Transistor, being a creation of same developers, is a beauty to behold. Mind you, not for the weak of mind. It’s heart-breaking at more than one point.

Saints Row was in my inventory forever, and so one day I got around to playing it, on co-op non the less. Can’t play first one, second one gives me motion sickness, so I started at the third one and merely read the wiki’s for the first two. Must say, there’s rare a game that makes me so happy inside as these games do. Definitely my favorite co-op of all times, and probably my favorite gangster games too.

Eye Divine Cybermancy fits the theme of me seeking out Cyberpunk stuff. My friend wanted a first person shooter we could play together and have fun doing so (some fps co-ops are lame, just that). She spoke of Cybermancy and I just thought I’ll go see how much is it on Steam, since it was Summer Sale and there it was, for 2.49eur. We took it and we had  a blast.

Shipwrecked is in a sense merely a DLC for Don’t Starve, but there it is. I got it, I loved it, can’t wait for it to become part of Don’t Starve Together. By the way, one of the highlights was getting that game free for myself and my friend, since they took me into the beta testing group!

Payday 2 was a nice surprise, I’m still playing it and loving it. Satisfies a whole different need of bold nihilistic sense of freedom and courage (not bravado). Wicked jokes, fun characters, and caring Developers just make my dark little heart happy.

Dragon Age Inquisition… Ah well, I don’t even have DLC’s yet, got it for my b-day in 2014, still playing, still loving, still happy to see Dorian throw a fit over lack of books in my library…

The Wolf Among Us was a discovery of the year, I believe. I really disliked the graphics from what I saw when my friends played it. But then I watched Drive with Ryan Gosling and that vibe got me. Now I can say it’s an amazing game and I am extremely sad there’s no more of it. I guess I’ll just have to indulge in the comics…

And, of course The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Unlike some, I’ve no disappointments to express over the length of it. Unlike many, I didn’t grind, because I explored and leveled up naturally doing so, by sheer need to beat off a Leshen off a chest I wanted. The only disappointment I did get was the shortness of the Hearts of Stone. Truth is, CDPR gave such ‘expansion packs’ free back in the day, audio and all, free for all with a registered game. The quality and length seemed quite alike to me, so I’m glad I got it free as a gift, for I’d be a lot more disappointed if I paid 10 bux for it! Other than that – yes, it’s very good!

6_watched

And the last are the things I watched. First of all, let me just mention Vikings. Loved it so very much, it was a far better season than the previous one, and the music is just mad good. Truly a blasphemy that I forgot to include it here. And I guess I can also add I loved American Horror Story: Hotel a lot too, although I haven’t finished it yet!

Let’s start with the movies now then. First is the Legend, a story of brother Krays. Strange in so many senses it was a perfect little fun-drama-bang piece after such disappointment as Black Mass was. I’m a bit sad I’ve no books on these guys, but I’ll have to fix that I guess! Any publishing houses who want to provide me with those?

I somehow rediscovered Dracula (1931) [here], and crafted my four favorite pairs of black and white gothic earrings. For once I appreciated how beautiful this movie is, and what a wonderful actor Bela Lugosi was.

Mr Holmes was a happy little piece for me too. I’m a great fan of Sherlock, and Sir Ian just fills in those shoes so well! It’s just great, go watch it.

Drive and Gangster Squad were on my Ryan Gosling marathon that I required to have all of a sudden. Now I can say I really enjoy that actor and the often superbly weird things he stars in. Gangster Squad is full of those good goofy, naughty, and otherwise good jokes you might also find in Saints Row. And Drive is just an amazing original movie. Never have I watched anything like this, but I do hope to watch something like this again, someday. When first 5 minutes you spend staring at a character who doesn’t even say a word (not a mute tho), and your face is glued to a screen in suspense…

I watched quite a few series too. Orange is the new Black got me by a mention in Supernatural. Was the last drop, more or less. It’s good in it’s own way, really. Mad men was more or less an old recommendation. Was mentioned in Orange is the new Black, so of course it was a natural chain… Banzai was a Lithuanian show, six episodes total, of these two Lithuanian men, educated people with sense of humor, traveling. This year they went for Japan. One of them, being tall and big man, had the funniest troubles concerning shoes! And the one zombie show I liked: In The Flesh. I liked the different approach to it, to zombies. I liked the Englishness of it all. I loved the strange-fam thing of “let’s pretend there’s nothing wrong”, and misleading prophecies everywhere. And I loved how protagonist was gay and no one bat an eye at it.

So all in all, as you see, I had a rich year spiritually, if I may say so. And I do believe many things I didn’t mention here for I merely forgot about it all, having so much. Those big and small things don’t let me say it was a bad year. No, it wasn’t. It just wasn’t good either. But that’s not a bad thing.

Stay happy and survive.

Painting, Grav3yardgirl

Disclaimer: I watch Grav3yardgirl because she’s different, interesting and just a marvelous spirit. Your excuse that “she’s a beauty guru and I don’t care for make-up” is not valid. She makes plenty of different videos to keep us entertained.

Some time ago she committed to get rid of her statement black hair strands in her blond mop of hair (which is a wonderful mop of hair). She had black in her blonde hair for forever. We made fan art with her blacks, she took pictures with her blacks. Thus no wonder she was stressed out to tears when she finally went there and got rid of the black. And, honestly, I missed her black hair too at first. I kept looking at her and something was amiss. But I know how it is to feel pressure to look this way and not that way, so I didn’t make any comments about it (and you should take example).

Then a couple days ago I felt this urge to watch her old videos. I subscribed to her after watching this video, I remember. But I have seen her before, and I have watched her to this day too. And you know? I think she looks much better without the blacks in her hair. And I hope others see it too.

As for all the memories documented of her with black in her hair, I thought I’ll be among those who will now stand firm with her and document her by painting her without the black in her hair. Thing is, I’m a bit stupid, so I forgot to take step-by-step of this drawing (I will try to do this next time), so instead here I offer you how I work in a picture of my OC : The Engineer, and then we move on to the Swamp Queen of ours : Grav3yardgirl

engineer_1

So, obviously this isn’t Bunny. This is Lailes and he’s all I have to show you the basics of how I start my painting. Bottom layer is any shade of grey you want. I usually take the middle one, the one right in between white and black. On top of it I make a lineart, rough one, just something to remember what’s where. The best way to learn to make these rough and fast, I figured, is to take a picture of someone or your own even, and outline what you need. Shape of the face, nose position, eye position and size, lip position. If there’s good light in the picture, you can outline that too with some dotted line or something. afterwards all layers must come in between these two. Start with the darkest, my advice. If light layers on top – that’s good. But when shadows layer on top… Well, that just doesn’t happen. BUT, as one of my fav artists said in one of the live streams: do what fits you best, there are no rules to define you.

From there just blend things, add lines, etch in hard lines where needs be and soften others. Yes, I draw in grey, I can then concentrate on one thing at a time: Lights and Shadows now, proportions then, sharpness and softness, and lastly – colors.

Bunny1

This is all I have of Bunny.  Above you see the same process. As you see, sometimes my grey overlaps the background grey and I end up with invisible bits. That’s a mistake – use either a shade lighter or darker, depending on how the light works in your drawing. Since we’re 3D objects – we don’t usually go as flat as the wall to match the shade, that’s all I’m saying. Color would of course render that piece of my mind – pointless. Thus, again: don’t let me stop you, you do you. bunny2

Next step for me is Photoshop. I use Paint Tool Sai for painting and pardon me for saying so, but Photoshop is just NOT meant for painting. IMO if you can make what the epic artists of DA make with Photoshop – you have divine talent or never gave other programs a chance. AGAIN: Find your own way to this. Do try programs. I’m sure a friend, a cousin, a co-worker or just someone – has something you don’t, something you could test out.bunny3And then there’s just the colors left. One layer after another.Take some brown, lessen the opacity of the soft brush, paint the face, change the blending, brush twice (that’s why you need opacity) to deepen the color, trice to work it into a shadow. Then a layer for hair, for the dress, for the eyes, for the lips, for the eyeshadow, for shadows in general. Background is the easy part, employ a lessened opacity soft eraser, find some texture picture (I used my own picture of sky with a cloud, using hues to change it into this teal-ish color), drop it on the drawing, change the blending, erase where it shouldn’t be.

  • Gradient maps are your friends.
  • Selective colors are your best friends.

Solstice Scents and how I can’t live without them

Not so long ago, thanks to youtube channel of Grav3yardgirl, I discovered Solstice Scents. And now I’m going nuts.

The first pack of samples I ordered around Halloween of 2012, and they probably had event going on, for with my 3 ordered scents, they also gave 3 more samples free to go. I remember I’ve gotten myself two types of “Forest” smells (Spellbound; Black), “Manor” which stands among my favorites ever since, “Jack and the Devil“; “Dragon Blood” obviously and “Shoikat Grove“. While at first I didn’t like all of them and Manor struck me like a lightening, later other scents became more pleasing too, I guess that’s because of my wicked imagination that connects smells to visions. Jack and the Devil is a bit too strong, but when I smell it, I think of how this Jack could have looked like, thus I imagine a dark figure, strolling in dark, maybe a bit damp and windy night, with a smile on his face and the sense of devil somewhere by. Same way with the forest smells, I right away take in the image of a specific forest, of elves that live in that forest and this specific smell lingering in their dead-silent kingdom, when in disguise they wait for mere mortals to pass by and if you’re to listen carefully, you might hear a bow creak as they wait for a reason to bury an arrow into your neck.

Image

I put most of the scents in there, first and second order

By the way, Inquisitor smells like Narnia. The first time the little girl enters it – snow, pines, coldness – yea, I can imagine an inquisitor-stature mean looking man with a pelt on his long black robe walking through there in seek of a path towards nearest village.

Later I ordered more and honestly I don’t even remember what it was that time, but every order I got (and so far it’s four orders total) was bigger than the last. This time no particular scent really captured me and two of them were truly not for me. One got mixed up, as I ordered Cenobite and received Cocoa Mallow. While the latter one was interesting, with scents of pure cocoa in it, I don’t really like the sort of smells so I simply gave it to somebody who appreciated it more. Another I gave to my mother, for she said it smelled “clean”. Go figure, seriously. And one other I still have, wait, no, I just checked my drawer, I still got two of the ones I didn’t particularly like, those were Lace Draped Specter and Moonlight on the Grove.  Don’t get me wrong, scents are good, but some perfumes are too overpowering to me. For instance, the Spectre smell reminds me of grandfather’s aftershave with very old medicine mixed, all that mingling with bakery still in clay oven, baking. Moonlight grove I can’t even describe. It’s a lot more pleasant, but it confuses the hell out of me.

My third bash is my favorite, for I liked every scent from the start AND found my new scent. Many people who feel themselves better when surrounded by fantasy-based scents are probably seeking “their own smell”. Pharoah is my scent.

  Image

Library and Master Bedroom intrigued me the most when I was ordering it. I ordered five (I took out the pharoah from the pack and just keep it by my side at all times. five means +1 free, they always give one free, but I guess there are events when they give more, remembering my first handful), and left out one blank. When you order it, they lead you to a page where you pick out scents if it’s more than one, if you leave few blank – you can later in order comments add which ones you want to be “filled into the blanks”, because usually not all are on the list. I left one blank and asked to drop me a Library in there and as always – they did exactly that. For free scent I took something Halloweenish but they very kindly contacted me and said they’re out of it, so I just asked for another sample of Manor (the girl said it’s her favorite too). So, as I received my pack (and I cut it with scissors thus ruining the usual presents they add in there – a bookmark, good one to add, a postcard where they thank you, I got two framed, and a card or two representing either the season or the main idea of your package, I think, I could be wrong. Also it’s filled with black confetti mixed with season-colored ones, so for Halloween it was orange bits, for winter it was green and for spring and the Valentine day so to say – hot pink, I keep them in a transparent bottle), I was obviously most curious for Library scent. I call myself a Nosferatu (reference to nosferatu’s, information rats from VtM: B ), and a book-rat, I figure it could be good. And it is good. It smells of leather bound book that got a bit moldy because the wooden cabinets in an old wooden house are slightly damp when it rains and warmth makes water vapor and seep through your windows, but they nevertheless collected dust and thus you open it – this is the smell. Others are great too, but as I said, I was struck even harder than with Manor, when I smelled Pharaoh. I don’t know what the hell it smells of, but I can imagine a parchment scroll, sandy smooth stone floor, incense clouds pouring out of golden pots, decorated with turquoise.

This smell first time I ordered in a perfume bottle, after trying out this sample. I just don’t think I can get enough.

Remember I mentioned they mixed up my order the one time? Well, I wrote to them, trying to be as kind and humble as possible, for it can happen to either of us and neither of us would want to be bitched at, and they with same attitude as mine – kindly and humbly gave me a “code” I was to enter in comments, so that with my next order I would receive a free extra sample of Cenobite.  You know, it’s very alike Cocoa Mallow so I slightly regret bothering them about it, but I’m glad never the less.

In general I am damn pleased with Solstice Scents, got nothing but good experience  and my little treasure of scent vials keep me smiling. I can indeed recommend them.

Paranormal Vlogs

I don’t watch many of these, but this girl I like, especially for her weirdness. I think in future I’ll make one post dedicated to her, passing here all her paranormal vlogs and other links she gave. It’s always interesting and it seems she’s a trustworthy too, too sincere face, if you could say so.
